Science Fun!
Leandro Bondad
Taught from a Christian perspective, students will learn to investigate the world around them, form opinions, and discuss different ideas and theories. Students will be encouraged in critical thinking from Grade 3 Science to Junior High School. Sano International School promotes scientific literacy. The school pursues to establish foundational science facts and skills to further instruction. We teach processes involved in a scientific method like the basic science process skills namely: hypothesizing, predicting, measuring, experimenting, making models, observing, inferring, classifying, identifying and controlling variables, collecting and recording data, defining operationally and communicating. Likewise, as a Christian school, we balance the presentation of facts with active participation. It’s our goal to show the integration of science into the student’s everyday life and affect a positive attitude toward science through relevant discussions.
Title: Trapped Clouds
Lesson : Changes in Matter
Students at the end of the lesson recognized that matter changes states and described how heating and cooling can cause matter to change in state.
In this activity, 3rd graders had an experiment investigating how clouds are formed from the collection of tiny droplets of water. They observe some characteristics of it like how small and light the particles are causing them to float in the air and form clouds. Also, applying the knowldege about the changes in phases of matter to investigate things around them.
Title: Float a Boat
Lesson : Density
Students learned the concept of density by making a boat that will float on water at certain amount of time after coins are added. The figured out the question: How many coins did it hold before sinking?
Buoyancy (also known as the buoyant force) is the force exerted on an object that is wholly or partly immersed in a fluid. In this activity, as we study about matter, the students investigated the role of mass and volume to object’s ability to sink and float known as density.
Title: Clean Up the Spill
Lesson : Natural Resources- Water
Students investigated the different ways to clean up oil spill in the ocean. The following science process skills were the target to hone among the students: hypothesizing, predicting, making a model, observing and inferring. Among the target 21st century skills included were: collaboration and critical thinking. The activity further help them realize how to take care of the environment.
Students studied several ways to handle oil spills namely: boom, skimmer, sorbant and use of chemical agents. Using a model, students investigate which of these ways are the most effective, least effective and which took the most time. The materials for making the model used were cooking oil (spills), water (ocean) and materials like cotton, medicine dropper, paper towels and dishwashing liquids that serves as the cleaning agent.
