SIS students engage with one of the principles of design - Colors. Students were able to group the primary, secondary and intermediate colors. They also enjoyed color experiments, where they mix colors to create different hues. Students applied their knowledge to their artwork. Best output ribbons were given to those students who produce outstanding artworks.

Raising Protist

Sano International School

RAISING PROTISTS! | Six graders enjoyed observing and culturing protists found in nearby sewage around the school. They collected water and put a few dead leaves and mud. This is in connection with what they are learning about cells, microscopes, and the living kingdoms.

6年生は理科の時間に、スクールの周辺の水を採取して、顕微鏡で微生物の観察をする実験をしました。細胞についての学びをとても楽しんでいた様子です。

After one week, they examined each drop with the compound microscope. This is such a great experience for them to actually see what they are learning from their textbooks and videos. Some of the skills for them to develop in this activity are communication, collaboration, hypothesizing, observing, inferring and experimenting. Students enjoyed the weeklong activity about cells, microscopes and living organisms.

Students engaged in plate making about the basic element of design - Lines and line patterns. Art is integrated as well in their Science class, where Grade 2 students utilized, egg containers to re create the life stages of butterfly.

September Blog: First Grade English

Leandro Bondad

Since the beginning of the school year, the First Grade have been learning a lot about the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We were reminded that when we were still a baby, we learned to listen to words. Then, we learned to speak words. Now we are learning to read and write words!

In September, one of the objectives focused on recognizing and writing color words: blue, purple, black, white, green, yellow, red, brown, and orange. We also learned a new game, Pink Toe! In this game, the teacher calls out a color and a body part. Students must find an object in the room that has the color and then touch the object with the selected body part. For example:

Construction Site

Sano International School

The lesson of 6th graders started with Earthquake and volcanoes this year. They constructed their model of a building that can withstand earthquake. Every year, different batch of six graders shares different ideas in building their design. The performance task of the chapter allow the students to perform the role of an engineer as stated below.

“You are an engineer. You have been assigned the task of building in an earthquake-prone area. The task of your construction team is to design a structure that will withstand the forces of an earthquake.”

The students were first asked to draw and design a model before actually building it using large marshmallows, pasta and fettuccine noodles. The main problem of the activity is: “How would you design a building that can withstand an earthquake”?

This activity aims to develop 21st century learning skills and basic science process skills like predicting, experimenting, making and using and using models, observing, identifying and controlling variables and recording data.

Phonetic Awareness Leads to Reading Readiness

After phonetic awareness and mastery, Panda class starts to blend letters and read words with short vowel sounds. They can match picture with the correct word. They start to read simple sentences. By using pictures Panda class can have fun learning the English language easily.

3rd Grade Art Class | Armor of God

Leandro Bondad

After a great week, in which many students went to Okutama Bible camp, we continued what we had learned there into our art class today!

During chapel times, we were learning about the armour of God, and how He has given us what we need to stay protected against anything that would seek to hurt us in life. Part of our armour is our shield of faith.

So, having learned about our shield, and having recently learned in art class about the use of positive and negative space, we combined these two things, to design and make our own shields.

Ephesians 6: 16 - Above all, carry the shield of faith so that you can extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Cooking Club | Gyoza Making

Leandro Bondad

We had a great time in this month’s cooking club - making gyoza!!  There was so much left behind, we just ate the meat part at the end.

Cooking club is an after school club offered once a month to all students.  It is a great way to increase our life skills, work together as a team and learn to make delicious food.  Thank you to our guest teacher who came in to teach her speciality of gyoza.

There wasn’t much left at the end of the class - we ate them all!!

Join us again on April 16th for the next cooking club.

Third Grade | Computing Class

Leandro Bondad

Class : Computer

Level : Third Grade

From toothbrushes to transport, every part of the world our students at Sano International School are growing in is influenced by computer technology. Computer literacy is one of the vital 21stCentury skills we teach and seek to incorporate into every subject, raising leaders who will fully harness the power of technology to impact nations. Each grade level, from first to nine also has a dedicated computer class, in which the students learn all about computers and their use. The students are encouraged to be using the machine in each of these classes, in tasks which as much as possible imitate real-life computer use. They will be empowered to enter this digital world with wisdom, knowledge, and respect for their fellow computer users.

In this lesson, Third grade were learning about one of the most frequently used types of application software – the word processor. Using Microsoft Word, they were practising writing, formatting and saving their work, whilst at the same time practising their English! By writing short paragraphs about themselves, adjusting the font and lettering size, the students were using both the hardware and software they have been learning about.

Art at work!

Title: My Winter Holiday and 2019 Calendar

The kids came back from the winter break with a lot of exciting stories. In the first Art Class of Year 2019, they recaptured their memories by drawing them. The kids also enjoyed making calendar for the New Year! They decorated their calendar by drawing things related to each month.

"So teach us to number our days,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Psalm 90:12

Science Fun!

Leandro Bondad

Taught from a Christian perspective, students will learn to investigate the world around them, form opinions, and discuss different ideas and theories. Students will be encouraged in critical thinking from Grade 3 Science to Junior High School. Sano International School promotes scientific literacy. The school pursues to establish foundational science facts and skills to further instruction. We teach processes involved in a scientific method like the basic science process skills namely: hypothesizing, predicting, measuring, experimenting, making models, observing, inferring, classifying, identifying and controlling variables, collecting and recording data, defining operationally and communicating.  Likewise, as a Christian school, we balance the presentation of facts with active participation. It’s our goal to show the integration of science into the student’s everyday life and affect a positive attitude toward science through relevant discussions.

Title: Trapped Clouds

Lesson : Changes in Matter

Students at the end of the lesson recognized that matter changes states and described how heating and cooling can cause matter to change in state.

In this activity, 3rd graders had an experiment investigating how clouds are formed from the collection of tiny droplets of water. They observe some characteristics of it like how small and light the particles are causing them to float in the air and form clouds. Also, applying the knowldege about the changes in phases of matter to investigate things around them.

Title: Float a Boat

Lesson : Density

Students learned the concept of density by making a boat that will float on water at certain amount of time after coins are added. The figured out the question: How many coins did it hold before sinking?

Buoyancy (also known as the buoyant force) is the force exerted on an object that is wholly or partly immersed in a fluid. In this activity, as we study about matter, the students investigated the role of mass and volume to object’s ability to sink and float known as density.

Title: Clean Up the Spill

Lesson : Natural Resources- Water

Students investigated the different ways to clean up oil spill in the ocean. The following science process skills were the target to hone among the students: hypothesizing, predicting, making a model, observing and inferring. Among the target 21st century skills included were: collaboration and critical thinking. The activity further help them realize how to take care of the environment.

Students studied several ways to handle oil spills namely: boom, skimmer, sorbant and use of chemical agents. Using a model, students investigate which of these ways are the most effective, least effective and which took the most time. The materials for making the model used were cooking oil (spills), water (ocean) and materials like cotton, medicine dropper, paper towels and dishwashing liquids that serves as the cleaning agent.
